Get on your feet

I have a pet peeve that has been brewing in my head for a while now, so I thought I'd share it.

Parents.

Let me explain...

Last Saturday, my baby girl danced in her first dance recital.  There were so many kids and young adults dancing that it took just over 2 hours.  The girls (and two boys) did awesome and deserved to be shown how awesome they did.  At the end, they all came out to do a finale.  At that point, I got on my feet and applauded my daughter.  She needed to know how proud I was of her and of sticking with dance for the school year.

When she spotted us and waved, I just about cried.  She knew we were there supporting her.

Then the dance was done and only a handful of parents got on their feet for their children.

WHY???

So many problems with kids today begin with their parents not standing up for their kids- be it with school, friends, siblings, band concerts, singing concerts, and sports (yes, dance is a sport).

I don't want to look back when I'm old at how I raised my kids and wonder if they knew how proud I was of them.  If that means jumping up and down, yelling their names, the name of the team they are on, standing in the rain, the cold, the heat, taking pictures, and embarrassing them a lot- they will know that I was there.

Even in their failures, I will be proud of their trying.

  2. I couldn't agree with you more! My oldest is 12 and he doesn't want hugs from me very often and especially in front of his friends. I tell him "I don't care, I'm still your mom." His friends may come and go but I'll always be there supporting him no matter what. You go girl!! ~Julie J
